Alex Hill, Vice President Experiential Solutions, Taylor Corp.
TEDA: Why are awards programs like those offered by The Experiential Design Authority important to our industry?
AH: Awards offer validation and feedback to individuals, work teams, the organization, and the client. The chosen design can also be seen as "cutting edge" or trend-setting, providing inspiration for other designers. These awards programs have the ability to showcase the creativity and storytelling that can make a tangible difference to future clients.
TEDA: Did you ever receive an award that made a significant difference in terms of your confidence or career?
AH: Certainly. My first design patent was edifying and validated the singular nature of the concept. It also made the statement that someone other than me thought the IP should be protected. I’m also very proud of receiving the Experiential Designers and Producers Association’s (EDPA) Hazel Hays Award.
TEDA: Why did you decide to serve on The Experiential Design Authority’s U.S. Advisory Board?
AH: Like mentoring our future industry leaders, serving on the EDPA Board and EDPA Foundation, and supporting students at Bemidji State University and FIT, I want to continue giving back to an industry that has given me so much. I am happy to see a fresh start and, more importantly, a fresh take!
TEDA: What advice would you give students currently pursuing a career in experiential design?
AH: Walk as many trade shows and events as you can. Explore retail. Study the flow of museums, galleries, and exhibits. And intern, intern, intern. The best advice I received early in my career was to be surprised enough at life to learn something new when you trip over it. So have the curiosity and humility to always be open to what you don’t yet know.
TEDA: What role do you think sustainability should play in experiential design?
AH: Design with sustainability in mind. Know your audience, the lifecycle of the project, and what’s next. And whenever possible, design with those next steps in mind.
