Behind the Scenes: The ExSys Awards and What Makes a Winning Design

The ExSys Awards celebrate excellence in system-based exhibit design, adaptability, and innovation. But what does it take to create a winning entry? Let’s go behind the scenes and explore the key components that make an exhibit stand out in the ExSys Awards competition.

Custom Look

One of the core principles of the ExSys Awards is demonstrating how inherently sustainable system components can be used in highly customized environments, making them appear imperceptible from fully custom stands. As such, the most impressive entries showcase an ability to incorporate systems in innovative ways, providing brands with all the benefits of a system alongside the trappings of a custom build.

Technical Excellence and Innovation

The ExSys Awards also recognize the technical innovation behind exhibits. A winning design often incorporates AV or other technology that enhances the user experience. Whether it's the use of augmented reality, touch-interactive surfaces, or dynamic lighting systems, the best exhibits push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Design Simplicity and Efficiency

While technology is important, simplicity and efficiency are just as crucial in creating a winning exhibit. A great stand isn’t just about the wow factor—it’s about making a lasting impact with a clean design and cohesive concept. The best entries use their space in clever, efficient ways, delivering powerful messages without unnecessary complexity.

What Do You Do?

Sometimes design basics are as (if not more) important than innovative new techniques. For example, is the exhibit appropriate for the brand? Does it address stated challenges or objectives? Can attendees tell who the exhibit is for and what that company does? And, if not, are those outcomes strategic or accidental? The design and hierarchy of graphics — as well as the incorporation of key messaging and proof points — can overpower a high-dollar, high-tech booth with all the bells and whistles but no brand narrative.

Worth Writing Home About

Given the quantity of exhibits on most show floors, standing out is often half the battle. Without a unique element, noteworthy messaging, eye-catching design, or some other exceptional element, it's far too easy for a well-intentioned stand to fade into the background. Award-worthy booths, however, leave an impact on attendees (and judges, alike). If there's nothing to write home about, there's probably no reason to elevate it as an example worthy of being emulated. Having said that, some of the most successful stands come from solid designs that are so well executed their polish and professionalism alone send meaningful messages about brands or their products.
